What About That Hedgehog?

Some people have been wondering how Sid Vicious is liking our new life at sea. He seems to enjoy it about as much as he enjoys anything else, which is to say not at all. Pretty much his only loves are cat food, cheddar cheese and being angry. He used to love snuggles until we got to the tropics. Now, he prefers lying on the floor with his tummy pressed onto the cool floorboards and refuses to be held.

For an undocumented hedgehog, it has been surprisingly easy to get him in to foreign countries. Before we left, I was terrified that we would be turned away from ports or that officials would force Sid into some dank, dark quarantine room for months, which, come to think of it, he probably wouldn't mind that much.

But all in all, he seems down with boat life. I doubt he would even try to escape. Or would he . . . ?

    1. They are pretty good pets. Chill, not a lot of work, small and lots of personality - most of it grumpy.

    1. A captain's hat is on the list. But trust me, he will hate it. :)

  4. Sid is so cute! My 20 year old daughter has been thinking of getting a hedgehog, but all we know about them is that they're adorable. Anything we should know first?

    1. They are really easy pets and in many ways wonderful to hang out with - lots of snuggling and entertaining antics.

But there are some downsides. They are grumpy. They are nocturnal, which means you won't be able to hang out with them like daytime animals. The biggest problem with hedgehog ownership is the poop though. They need to run a lot and have to have a wheel, and they often poop while running on the wheel, which makes for some unpleasant wheel cleaning moments. It's not that bad, but it's good to be informed. Sid seems to have learned to not poop on the wheel as much, which I greatly appreciate.

Anyway, we have loved having him, and he has really been a joy on the boat.

  5. I wonder if Sid is setting a world record for the longest sail by a hedgehog? Also I wonder: how can you tell if a hedgehog gets seasick? He should have his own blog, or at least he should be a guest poster for this blog.

  6. Poor Sid. Doesn't seem like he's a big fan of boats. Maybe he needs a seasickness patch. ;)
