Sloth Watch 2012

My dad is a lover of sloths - the slow moving, Central American arboreal herbivores - and when he comes to visit us at the end of the year we were going to have what I call Sloth Watch 2013. Well, I've started early. And what excitement it is! No, seriously, you might not think it, but sloth watching is pretty entertaining - kind of like the Olympics but slower and with more butt scratching.

I was not lying about the butt scratching.

I'm also working on my sloth photography. You would think it would be quite simple. After all, the sloth isn't going anywhere fast unlike my photographic arch-nemesis the chicken. But the sloth is way up in trees (generally sleeping) and blends in well to its surroundings, turning snapping a quick sloth pic into the difficult task of delicately stepping through jungle bog in an attempt to get past the giant tree limb that keeps blocking the view.

But, hey, at least I'm getting a lot of practice. We have seen two three-toed sloths in the past three days here on Isla Bastimentos. Bring on the excitement.

    1. LOL! I keep thinking about a sloth horror movie and the really, really, really long scream as the sloth approaches very, very, very slowly. Cracks me up.

  2. Tate also has a LOVE of all things Sloth. They are so cute and "laid back".

I bet your photos would be better from up in the trees. Maybe you could get Vlad to hoist you up in a bosuns chair. Be sure to eat shelled peanuts so Vlad can get the full jungle effect from down below.

What do Sloth's like to eat? If you find a Sloth delicacy you could use it to bribe them into more photo shoots.

  3. Love sloths! And I love how you focus on animals so much in your blog. One of the driving forces behind my desire to cruise is to see the wildlife. I majored in animal behavior/wildlife bio as an undergrad. I want to see all the animals everywhere! Go climb those trees so you can get good closeups of those sloths!
